The San Francisco Giants have named former catcher Buster Posey as their new President of Baseball Operations, replacing Farhan Zaidi. This decision was announced by Chairman Greg Johnson following the Giants’ 80-82 season under manager Bob Melvin, showing marginal improvement from the previous year. Although the Giants clinched the NL West title in 2021, they have not reached the playoffs since then.
Posey, aged 37, became part of the club’s ownership group in September 2022, less than a year after his retirement in November 2021. Johnson expressed his excitement about Posey taking on the expanded role, stating, “We are looking for someone who can define, direct, and lead this franchise’s baseball philosophy and we feel that Buster is the perfect fit. Buster has the demeanor, intelligence and drive to do this job, and we are confident that he and Bob Melvin will work together to bring back winning baseball to San Francisco.”
Farhan Zaidi, who was previously hired from the Los Angeles Dodgers in November 2018, has been relieved of his duties as the President of Baseball Operations. Johnson acknowledged Zaidi’s contributions and dedication to the organization over the past six years, but noted that the desired results were not achieved. Reflecting on the decision, Johnson said, “Ultimately, the results have not been what we had hoped, and while that responsibility is shared by all of us, we have decided that a change is necessary.”
With Posey taking the helm as the new President of Baseball Operations, the Giants are optimistic about the future direction of the team under his leadership.
