London Underground workers are preparing to stage a series of strikes next month following a dispute over pay. Members of Aslef, including Tube drivers, instructors, management grades, and engineering staff, will walk out on different days in early November. Finn Brennan, Aslef’s full-time organiser on London Underground, expressed reluctance towards strike action, stating that they have been compelled to take this step due to the lack of meaningful negotiation from LU management.
Brennan highlighted that Aslef members voted overwhelmingly in favour of strike action, but discussions on crucial aspects of their pay claim have not been entertained by Underground management. The union is particularly dissatisfied with the existing pay offer of 3.8% plus a variable lump sum, as it would result in Underground drivers earning less than their counterparts on other Transport for London services, despite working longer hours.
Aslef disclosed that train operators and management grades are scheduled to strike on November 7 and 12, while engineering drivers will refrain from work for a 24-hour period starting from 6pm on November 1. Additionally, different groups of workers will implement overtime bans at varying times throughout November.
The impending strikes are expected to disrupt transport services in and around the capital, potentially causing inconvenience to passengers. Despite the potential impact on commuters and the loss of earnings for workers, the union emphasises that a resolution through dialogue and negotiation with LU management is paramount to avoid further industrial action.
