Nigel Farage has criticised the Football Association (FA) for its decision to appoint German manager Thomas Tuchel as the successor to Gareth Southgate. Farage questioned the FA’s choice, expressing his frustration by asking, “Why oh why can’t we have an English manager?”
Tuchel, who has previously managed clubs like Chelsea, Paris St Germain, and Bayern Munich, will be taking over from interim boss Lee Carsley in January. This appointment makes Tuchel the third non-Englishman to hold the position after Sven-Goran Eriksson and Fabio Capello.
While the Prince of Wales wished Tuchel luck in his new role, Farage’s comments reflect a larger sentiment among critics who believe that international football should feature managers from the country they represent. Farage highlighted Gareth Southgate’s success and patriotism, stating, “We had Gareth Southgate, who was the most successful manager for many, many decades.”
Expressing disappointment in the decision, Farage added, “This feels like a terrible mistake and a retrograde step in my view.” Tuchel, on the other hand, expressed his pride at being appointed as the England manager, stating, “To have the chance to represent England is a huge privilege.”
The 51-year-old manager, who will be assisted by English coach Anthony Barry, is set to begin his role on January 1 in preparation for the World Cup qualifying campaign. The FA revealed that Tuchel signed his contract on October 8, with the announcement delayed to avoid distraction during international fixtures.
Despite speculation that interim coach Lee Carsley might land the permanent role, the FA ultimately identified Tuchel as the preferred candidate. Carsley will continue in his role for the upcoming Nations League matches before returning to his position as the Under-21 boss.
