A US Navy veteran, Charles Wimberly, is facing the possibility of three years in a Dubai prison for carrying prescription medications when he travelled to the UAE. The 52-year-old veteran from Covington, Georgia had packed prescription CBD and Ibuprofen to help with a degenerative joint disease. After six days of sightseeing in Dubai, Mr. Wimberly, who suffers from PTSD, was detained at Dubai International Airport on 27th September for allegedly “trafficking” his own prescribed medication.
Airport security staff discovered prescription Ibuprofen and CBD oil belonging to Mr. Wimberly during a pre-departure screening, leading to his detention. Radha Stirling, CEO of Detained in Dubai, described the situation as “every tourist’s nightmare,” highlighting that Charles had been deprived of his essential prescription medication for managing conditions such as diabetes and sleep apnea, which resulted in a diabetic episode due to the lack of access to his medication.
Stirling mentioned that Mr. Wimberly, a law-abiding individual as evidenced by his medical history, had unintentionally misunderstood the regulations regarding prescription medicine in the UAE. While it is permissible to bring up to a three-month supply of medication into the country with a valid prescription, travellers carrying controlled medication, including narcotic and psychotropic drugs, must obtain approval from the Ministry of Health before their trip.
Although Mr. Wimberly has been released on bail, he is currently unable to leave the UAE, facing unexpected financial burdens due to hotel, medical, and legal expenses while awaiting further developments on his case. The veteran expressed his distress over the situation, stating that his PTSD has escalated, leaving him in a state of emotional turmoil and feeling like he has let his loved ones down.
Scheduled for a significant spinal surgery in November back home in Georgia, Mr. Wimberly had been looking forward to a peaceful holiday in Dubai before the unfortunate turn of events. The case highlights the importance of understanding and following medication regulations when travelling abroad to avoid facing legal consequences inadvertently.
