South Lanarkshire leader welcomes employment bill proposals

South Lanarkshire Council leader Joe Fagan has embraced the proposed employment rights bill set to be introduced at Westminster, stating that the measures within the bill will have a positive impact on staff, recruitment, and industries throughout the area. Fagan mentioned that the council has already implemented some of the bill’s measures, such as improved paternity benefits and the right to disconnect outside of work hours, for its employees. He is optimistic that these new laws will benefit workers across various sectors.

Following the unveiling of the employment bill at the UK parliament, aimed at enhancing economic security and growth for businesses, workers, and communities across the UK, Fagan expressed his support. The bill includes 28 reforms addressing issues like zero-hours contracts, paternity and parental leave rights, and statutory sick pay enhancements. Fagan, who leads the council’s community wealth-building commission, believes these proposals will align with South Lanarkshire’s economic development strategies and help address labour market challenges.

Fagan highlighted the importance of upgrading workers’ rights in delivering stability and supporting local wealth-building efforts in South Lanarkshire. He emphasised the need for collaboration among employers, trade unions, and government to ensure the bill’s passage, promoting local prosperity and better outcomes for workers across various sectors in South Lanarkshire. The leader also recognised the council’s proactive stance on workplace policies implemented two years ago, which included extending parental leave and introducing a ‘right to switch off’.

Moreover, in September 2022, the council’s executive committee approved additional employment changes, such as extending paid paternity leave and neonatal leave, as well as establishing a ‘right to disconnect’ policy to safeguard employees’ mental health and well-being. Fagan indicated that these initiatives have positioned South Lanarkshire ahead in supporting its workforce and maintaining a healthy work-life balance.

Overall, South Lanarkshire’s approach to prioritising employee rights and well-being aligns with the upcoming employment bill’s objectives, illustrating a commitment to fostering a supportive and inclusive work environment for workers across the region.
