New laser-based test ‘could detect different types of dementia in seconds’

A groundbreaking new laser-based test has the potential to transform the detection of different types of dementia within seconds, according to scientists. Researchers at the University Hospital Southampton (UHS) and the University of Southampton have developed a pioneering study that utilises lasers to analyse bodily fluids like blood, spinal fluid, or mucus to identify individuals with dementia early on in the disease.

Dementia diagnosis typically takes up to two years, but this innovative laser-based technique is not only more cost-effective than current tests but can also provide results in mere seconds, as highlighted by the researchers. Initial trials have demonstrated its ability to detect Alzheimer’s disease with an average accuracy exceeding 93%.

Professor Chris Kipps, a consultant neurologist at University Hospital Southampton, hailed the new technique as a “breakthrough in medical technology” that could revolutionise the approach to dementia diagnosis. He emphasised that this innovation represents not just a step forward in healthcare quality but a paradigm shift that redefines the clinical approach to neurodegenerative diseases.

With over 850,000 individuals living with dementia in the UK, a number expected to rise to 1.4 million by 2040, the significance of early and accurate diagnosis is paramount. Dementia encompasses various types, including Alzheimer’s and vascular dementia, which progressively deteriorates over time. Current diagnostic tools, such as brain scans and memory tests, often delay diagnosis, leading to less effective treatment options when identified at later stages of the disease.

One of the primary challenges lies in distinguishing between closely-related types of dementia. The new technology, known as multi-excitation Raman spectroscopy (MX-Raman), aims to establish a “biochemical fingerprint” of an individual to aid in pinpointing the specific type of dementia. Professor Sumeet Mahajan of the University of Southampton highlighted the potential of their holistic MX-Raman technique to revolutionise dementia diagnostics by offering more discriminatory, efficient, and cost-effective solutions that could significantly improve patient outcomes.

The innovative research has generated considerable optimism within the medical community, with the hope that this laser-based test could lead to a significant advancement in how dementia is diagnosed and managed in the future.
