The Scottish National Party (SNP) has called on Labour Chancellor Rachel Reeves to address the soaring costs of car insurance in the UK. According to a study commissioned by the SNP, UK car insurance premiums increased by 82% between May 2021 and July 2024. In comparison, car insurance premiums in neighbouring European Union countries only rose by 19% during the same period.
The research, conducted by the House of Commons library, revealed that car insurance saw a 29% growth between August 2022 and July 2023 and a further 38% increase between August 2023 and August 2024. This rise occurred despite a decrease in wider inflation rates. The SNP has emphasised the need for Labour to take action to reduce insurance costs and put money back into the pockets of consumers.
SNP spokesperson for the Economy, Dave Doogan, highlighted Labour’s promise in their general election manifesto to address the escalating car insurance costs. The upcoming UK budget will serve as a test of whether Labour will fulfil this commitment or break another promise, according to Doogan. The SNP argues that while inflation is easing, the rising car insurance expenses pose a significant burden on individuals and must be addressed.
Doogan stressed the importance of bringing down car insurance costs, especially in light of the substantial 82% increase over the past three years. The SNP criticised the current situation in the UK, describing it as “broken, Brexit Britain,” where consumers face inflationary pressures on essentials like energy, food, and insurance. In contrast, EU nations have managed to align car insurance costs with general inflation, underscoring the disparity faced by UK consumers.
The UK Government held discussions with insurance bodies and consumer groups to address the escalating costs of motor insurance. A new motor insurance taskforce has been established by Transport Secretary Louise Haigh and Economic Secretary to the Treasury Tulip Siddiq to examine the factors contributing to high insurance costs, including age and ethnicity disparities.
Labour has been urged to take decisive action to tackle the rising costs of car insurance and alleviate financial burdens on consumers. The SNP’s call for intervention comes at a crucial time as households grapple with soaring insurance expenses amidst economic challenges. The UK Government’s response to this issue will be closely watched as efforts to alleviate the financial strain on consumers remain a top priority.
