Alabama is set to carry out the execution of a man convicted of a quintuple murder in 2016. Derrick Dearman, 36, confessed to killing five individuals with an ax and gun during a drug-fueled rampage and has opted to forgo further appeals, allowing his execution to proceed as scheduled.
The execution by lethal injection is slated to take place at 6 p.m. on Thursday at the William C. Holman Correctional Facility in southern Alabama. Dearman’s heinous crimes involved breaking into the residence where his estranged girlfriend sought refuge, leading to the tragic loss of five lives.
In an April letter to a judge, Dearman acknowledged his guilt and expressed a desire to take responsibility for his actions without further delay. He stated, “it’s not fair to the victims or their families to keep prolonging the justice that they so rightly deserve,” demonstrating a sense of remorse for the devastation he caused.
The victims of the 2016 massacre were Shannon Melissa Randall, 35; Joseph Adam Turner, 26; Robert Lee Brown, 26; Justin Kaleb Reed, 23; and Chelsea Marie Reed, 22, all of whom were related. Tragically, Chelsea Reed was pregnant at the time of her death, expecting a son named Aiden Kaleb with her husband Justin Reed.
The events leading to the murders unfolded when Dearman’s girlfriend sought refuge at the home of Joseph Turner, her brother, after facing abuse from Dearman. Despite being turned away multiple times that night, Dearman returned to the house in the early hours of the morning while the victims were asleep. He proceeded to carry out the brutal attacks with an ax and gun before fleeing with his girlfriend to Mississippi.
Dearman surrendered to authorities and attributed his actions to drug influence, specifically methamphetamine. Although initially pleading not guilty, he later changed his plea to guilty after dismissing his attorneys. A jury unanimously convicted and recommended a death sentence in compliance with Alabama’s capital murder laws.
Having awaited his fate on death row since 2018, Dearman’s impending execution marks the fifth scheduled in Alabama this year. The state has previously utilized nitrogen gas and lethal injection as methods of execution, with the latter remaining the primary choice for carrying out capital punishment.
