Red Bull Cannot Afford F1 Driver Disparity as Pressure Grows on Sergio Perez
Red Bull team principal, Christian Horner, is facing mounting pressure as he admits that his team “need answers” to address the driver line-up dilemma, particularly concerning Sergio Perez. The Mexican driver currently trails his teammate and championship leader, Max Verstappen, by a significant 187 points after 18 races this season, with his last Grand Prix win dating back to April 2023.
Perez is under contract with Red Bull until the end of 2025, with an option to extend for 2026. However, the recent promotion of Liam Lawson to Red Bull’s sister team for the upcoming US Grand Prix suggests that Red Bull is evaluating their options for next year. With McLaren surpassing them in the constructors’ standings, Horner acknowledges that the team cannot afford a substantial gap between Verstappen and his teammate in the future.
“We desperately need answers,” Horner stated in an Autosport interview regarding Red Bull’s driver situation. The team faces tough competition from rivals like Ferrari, with Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc, as well as McLaren’s strong lineup featuring Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri. Horner emphasises the necessity for competitive performances from both Red Bull drivers to remain competitive in the upcoming season.
Sergio Perez has been with Red Bull since 2021 when he replaced Alex Albon. Despite his experience, he has struggled to match Verstappen’s performances throughout their partnership. Yuki Tsunoda is set to continue with RB next year and could potentially challenge Perez with a strong finish to this season. Daniel Ricciardo was recently replaced by Lawson after failing to meet the required standards to replace Perez.
As the F1 season progresses, Perez will be aiming for a strong finish starting with the upcoming race in Austin, before heading to his home race in Mexico City. With increasing pressure on the Red Bull team to address the driver disparity, all eyes are on how they will navigate this challenge in the upcoming races.
