Adam Peaty, the renowned British swimmer, is contemplating a potential return to competitive swimming for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games if the 50m breaststroke event is included in the programme. After narrowly missing out on a gold medal in the 100m breaststroke at the Paris 2024 Olympics, Peaty expressed his intention to take a break from the sport to focus on his family.
The 29-year-old, who boasts being a world-record holder over 50 metres and a three-time world champion in the discipline, has hinted at the possibility of making a comeback for the upcoming Games in California, particularly if he has the opportunity to compete for gold in the sprint event where he excels. Traditionally, only freestyle events have featured a one-length race at the Olympic level. However, there have been reports post-Paris 2024 suggesting that World Aquatics will advocate for the addition of the 50m breaststroke, backstroke, and butterfly events to the Olympic swimming itinerary.
If this proposal is successful, Peaty has affirmed his commitment to participating. Speaking to BBC Breakfast, he stated, “World Aquatics are potentially putting forward to the Olympic committee about the 50m breaststroke sprint being in the Games.” Peaty added, “If that happens it would be 100% yes, I am there – I am not sure when I will find out.”
Despite his plans to take a hiatus from swimming, Peaty plans to remain active and in shape, indicating that he will continue training for two years while also pursuing other interests such as public speaking and motivating others. His remarkable performance in Paris earned him a silver medal, marking his sixth Olympic medal overall. Notably, Peaty had tested positive for Covid-19 the day after losing to Nicolo Martinenghi in a closely contested race.
