Citroen e-SpaceTourer gets an MPV makeover in the UK
The Citroen e-SpaceTourer has been transformed into an electric van with a people-carrier twist. Offering immense space and practicality, the e-SpaceTourer features a classic Citroen design, proudly displaying the latest Citroen crest on its nose. The vehicle is capable of seating up to nine people in its standard configuration, with the luxurious Max version accommodating up to eight individuals. Available in two lengths – a five-metre ‘M’ and a 5.3-metre ‘XL’ – the XL provides even more space for passengers and luggage, offering a plethora of seating configurations including a six-seater Max with three rows of premium captain’s chairs. Despite its size, the e-SpaceTourer drives less van-like than expected, especially the Max which is well-equipped with VIP-style features. However, its range is compromised due to its size and weight, particularly with the 50kWh version struggling compared to the larger battery option, resulting in its appeal being impacted by high prices and limited range.
During a hands-on test of the Citroen e-SpaceTourer, it was found that the vehicle presented both strengths and compromises. The 50kWh and 75kWh battery options cater to different needs in terms of range and charging capabilities. The smaller 50kWh battery provides an official range of 136 miles, which may drop significantly in real-world use, especially on motorways. In comparison, the 75kWh battery offers a range of 215 miles, which translates to around 150 miles in practical scenarios. While an 80 per cent charge on the 75kWh battery requires 45 minutes with a 100kW DC rapid charger, the van delivers a surprisingly refined driving experience despite its van-based origins, offering decent refinement and safety features to ensure a comfortable ride.
In terms of interior design and practicality, the Citroen e-SpaceTourer reveals a dual nature. The basic ‘You’ version offers ample seating but lacks certain features and finishes. On the other hand, the ‘Max’ variant boasts a more appealing aesthetic with premium touches such as leather seats, thick carpeting, and advanced climate control. Both the ‘M’ and ‘XL’ versions provide generous space and flexible seating arrangements to cater to various passenger and cargo needs. The vehicle’s practicality is further enhanced by its spacious boot, especially in the XL model, offering a commanding driving position that provides a unique perspective on the road.
Despite the e-SpaceTourer’s tempting price point in the ‘You’ trim starting from £38,135, opting for the more functional 75kWh battery increases the base price to £43,535. The higher-spec ‘Max’ trim, priced from £54,375, adds premium features but comes with a steeper cost. Due to its size and aerodynamics, the e-SpaceTourer is not the most efficient electric vehicle, yet running costs are reduced compared to its diesel counterpart due to lower electricity expenses. The vehicle competes with models like the Peugeot e-Traveller, Ford e-Tourneo Custom, and Vauxhall Vivaro Life Electric in the market.
