Mariah Carey has recently shared the reason behind her relatively low number of Grammy awards, despite her immense talent and success in the music industry. The renowned singer, known for her exceptional five-octave vocal range and numerous chart-topping hits, has only secured five Grammy awards throughout her illustrious career.
Despite releasing 15 studio albums, two soundtrack albums, and achieving global record sales of 220 million, with 19 number one hits on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, Mariah Carey’s Grammy success has been limited. She is second only to the Beatles for the highest number of chart-toppers, yet the prestigious music awards have largely eluded her.
During a recent appearance on the comedy podcast Las Culturistas with hosts Bowen Yang and Matt Rogers, Carey candidly addressed her lack of Grammy recognition. When Rogers pointed out her scarcity of Grammy wins, Carey humorously responded, “They scammed me. They toy with me!”
In her debut year in 1990, Carey received five Grammy nominations, winning two for Best Pop Vocal Performance, Female for her debut single “Vision of Love,” and Best New Artist. Despite a string of nine nominations throughout the nineties and 11 consecutive number one hits, Carey failed to secure any additional Grammy wins in that decade.
It wasn’t until 2006, with the release of her album “The Emancipation of Mimi,” that Carey obtained her final three Grammys, albeit missing out on the major categories of Record of the Year and Album of the Year. Since then, Carey has not added any more Grammy awards to her collection.
Fans and fellow artists have expressed support for Carey, with Yang emphatically stating, “Stop playing in this woman’s face!” Despite the Grammy snubs, Mariah Carey continues to be celebrated for her immense musical talent and lasting impact on the music industry.
