Hurricane Helene wreaked havoc in Florida before moving across the southern and eastern parts of the United States, resulting in at least 116 fatalities and extensive destruction of homes and properties. The storm’s damaging winds hit Georgia on Friday, leaving over half a million people without power, causing fallen trees, and triggering severe flooding.
Georgia Governor Brian Kemp confirmed that the state had suffered at least 25 casualties, with the aftermath resembling a scene where “a bomb went off.” Despite the dire situation in her state, Greene’s decision to attend a football game in another state sparked outrage on social media.
Critics took aim at Greene for seemingly prioritising a leisure activity over her responsibilities to her constituents during a crisis. They questioned her choices, with one user pointing out, “A hurricane hit Georgia and this was your priority?” Another criticised, “There have been many deaths in Georgia, and you’re at a football game?”
Some drew comparisons between Greene’s actions and those of Texas Senator Ted Cruz, who faced backlash for travelling to Cancun during a major storm in Texas earlier in the year. Greene was dubbed the “Ted Cruz of Georgia” by online commentators, highlighting the perceived disconnect between her actions and the needs of her state.
In response to the backlash, Greene posted a video showing the extent of the flooding and destruction caused by Hurricane Helene, alongside a message urging for prayers for those affected. However, her critics were quick to point out the irony of her remote support while she was seen enjoying a football game in Alabama.
