Russian President Vladimir Putin has introduced peculiar new laws in Russia that will outlaw anything suggesting a child-free lifestyle is appealing. The legislation, which aims to prohibit “propaganda” discouraging Russians from having children, was overwhelmingly approved in the lower house of parliament during the first of three readings.
Known for portraying Russia as a stronghold of “traditional values” engaged in an existential struggle against the West, Putin has been advocating for women to have a minimum of three children to secure the country’s demographic future. The new laws would censor materials on the internet, in the media, and in advertising that depict a child-free life as desirable, subjecting the creators to fines.
The urgency surrounding this issue has heightened following the release of official data showing that Russia’s birth rate has dropped to its lowest point in twenty-five years. Simultaneously, mortality rates are on the rise with no resolution in sight to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, where casualties on both sides continue to mount.
Deputy Duma speaker Anna Kuznetsova stated that the law forms a part of Russia’s “national security strategy” and is being championed by Vyacheslav Volodin, a close ally of Putin who serves as the chairman of the lower house. Volodin has accused the so-called “child-free movement” of undermining family values by promoting a lifestyle that consciously avoids parenthood.
However, he clarified that the law is not intended to criminalize women who choose not to have children. In a related development, the UK government has imposed sanctions on an additional 18 Russian oil tankers and four liquified natural gas vessels, marking the largest batch of sanctions against Russia’s “shadow fleet” to date. The sanctioned tankers will be prohibited from UK ports and maritime services, impacting a significant portion of Russia’s oil transportation activities.
This relentless action by the UK government is aimed at disrupting Putin’s revenue streams and constraining his ability to fund military activities. The targeted oil tankers were responsible for transporting an estimated £4.9 billion last year. Putin’s latest move to enforce laws promoting childbearing and the UK’s sanctions against Russian vessels highlight the ongoing dynamics in the geopolitical landscape.
