British archaeologists have made an astonishing discovery beneath the city of Petra, uncovering a secret tomb that had remained undisturbed for an incredible 2,000 years. The researchers from the University of St Andrews were granted access to explore the Treasury, a renowned World Heritage site famously featured in the 1989 film “Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.”
In the film, the Treasury is depicted as the cinematic resting place of the Holy Grail, adding to the intrigue surrounding this ancient structure. During their exploration, the team stumbled upon a hidden tomb containing the remains of 12 ancient skeletons, along with a remarkable chalice resembling the Holy Grail showcased in the movie starring Harrison Ford.
Professor Richard Bates from the St Andrews School of Earth and Environmental Science hailed the discovery as a significant milestone, noting that very few intact burials from the early Nabataeans had ever been found in Petra before. The burial site, along with its contents, including human remains and artifacts, is expected to provide valuable insights into the history of Petra and the Nabatean people.
It was revealed that one of the skeletons in the tomb was found holding a ceramic vessel strikingly similar to the Holy Grail from the movie. Further examination identified the vessel as the top portion of a broken jug, likely dating back to the first century BC. The team’s excavation efforts were part of a remote sensing scan approved by Jordanian authorities, leading to the discovery of the hidden tomb beneath the Treasury.
Dr Tim Kinnaird, also from the University of St Andrews, dated the construction of the tomb to the period between the mid-1st century BC and the early 2nd century AD. The tomb is believed to have been built as a mausoleum and crypt for Aretas IV Philopatris, a figure from the Nabatean Kingdom. Despite the tomb’s age, its preservation has provided valuable archaeological insights due to minimal disturbance over the centuries.
The findings from this remarkable excavation in Petra are set to be showcased in a forthcoming program on the Discovery Channel, with adventurer Josh Gates presenting the intriguing details of the historic discovery. The uncovering of this hidden tomb beneath Petra adds another layer of mystery and fascination to this ancient and legendary site, shedding new light on the rich history and culture of the region.
