An Uber driver has shared her harrowing experience of a recent attempted carjacking that nearly cost her life. The mother-of-six, who chose to remain anonymous due to safety concerns, recounted the terrifying incident that unfolded in St. Louis, Missouri, where she narrowly escaped a violent attack by two teenage culprits.
According to the driver, the ordeal began when she accepted a ride request on the Uber app, picking up two young passengers who led her down a secluded road near a metal factory. Sensing danger, she refused to proceed further, triggering a chilling turn of events. The teenagers brandished a gun, prompting her to reach for her own weapon, only to have her keys snatched from the ignition.
In a moment of sheer terror, the assailants unleashed a barrage of bullets at her vehicle, with her headrest becoming an unlikely saviour by absorbing two of the shots. Miraculously, she escaped with just a grazed arm, thanks to the protective seat cushion. Despite the traumatic experience, the driver has been haunted by the distressing memories, replaying the incident in her mind repeatedly.
The Riverview Police Department is still investigating the case, with the suspects remaining at large. However, the driver expressed disappointment that Uber has not offered financial assistance for medical expenses or a replacement vehicle. In response, an Uber spokesperson conveyed sympathy for the driver’s ordeal, affirming the company’s commitment to supporting her and cooperating with law enforcement.
Reflecting on her near-death encounter, the resilient driver expressed gratitude for surviving to witness her daughter’s wedding just weeks after the traumatic event. She emphasised the profound impact of the incident on her perspective, highlighting the importance of prioritising safety over occupational risks.
