Huge AI vulnerability could put human life at risk, researchers warn

A recent study has brought to light a significant security flaw in artificially intelligent systems that could potentially endanger human lives, alert researchers. The study highlights the vulnerability of robotic systems that rely on AI to make decisions, raising concerns about their safety. The focus of the research was on large language models (LLMs), such as ChatGPT, which serve as the foundation for various AI systems, including those used in robotics.

According to experts at the University of Pennsylvania, the technology utilized in these systems is susceptible to security vulnerabilities and weaknesses that could be exploited by hackers to manipulate the systems for unintended purposes. Professor George Pappas from the university emphasised, “Our work shows that, at this moment, large language models are just not safe enough when integrated with the physical world.” The researchers discovered that it was feasible to circumvent security measures in existing systems, including a self-driving car system that could be compromised to ignore road safety protocols.

In response to these findings, the research team is collaborating with developers to identify and address the weaknesses in these systems. However, they underscored the need for a comprehensive reevaluation of how such systems are designed, rather than merely addressing specific vulnerabilities. Coauthor Vijay Kumar remarked, “The findings of this paper make abundantly clear that having a safety-first approach is critical to unlocking responsible innovation,” stressing the importance of addressing inherent vulnerabilities before deploying AI-powered robots in real-world scenarios.

The study advocates for a framework for verification and validation to ensure that robotic systems adhere to societal norms when executing actions. The research team’s efforts aim to promote a safety-centric approach to AI development and deployment, with the ultimate goal of mitigating risks associated with integrating AI into physical environments. The implications of the study suggest that a fundamental reconsideration of current practices is necessary to enhance the security and reliability of AI technologies in robotics.
