HMRC urges workers to secure full state pension payments as deadline looms

HMRC Urges Workers to Secure Full State Pension by Filling National Insurance Gaps

In a move to ensure individuals receive their full state pension entitlement, HMRC has issued a call for workers to act promptly by plugging any gaps in their national insurance contributions before the looming deadline. With less than six months remaining, individuals must take action to maximise their state pension benefits.

The government has set a deadline for individuals to fill gaps in their national insurance records, specifically covering the period between 6 April 2006 and 5 April 2018. While individuals can continue to address gaps in records over the last six years, the deadline for earlier contributions is set for 5 April 2025, after having been extended twice previously.

HMRC reported that over 10,000 payments totalling £12.5 million have already been processed through their new digital service launched in April 2024. To qualify for the full new state pension amount, most people will need a minimum of 35 full national insurance years. Each year filled can result in an additional pre-tax state pension of £328, proving to be a long-term investment that pays for itself in under three years.

Money expert, Martin Lewis, emphasised the importance of filling in national insurance years, noting the significant financial benefits individuals can gain. Despite the potential for substantial returns, concerns have been raised regarding HMRC’s capacity to manage the anticipated surge in claims leading up to the deadline.

Exploring one’s eligibility and making a claim can be a complex process, prompting Money Saving Expert to provide a useful guide for those seeking to benefit from filling in national insurance gaps. Minister for Pensions, Emma Reynolds, stressed the importance of securing one’s pension entitlement before the deadline, encouraging individuals to utilise the online tool for a quick assessment of their status.

As the deadline approaches, individuals are advised to take the necessary steps to secure their full state pension entitlement by addressing any outstanding national insurance gaps. By acting swiftly, individuals can safeguard their financial future and ensure a comfortable retirement.
