Dionne Warwick, BeBe Winans, Darlene Love, and a large choir were among those who celebrated Cissy Houston’s life during the music-filled ceremony at New Hope Baptist Church. This church holds sentimental value as Houston had been a congregant and choir leader there for many years. Framed photos of Houston adorned the walls, and her coffin was placed in front of the pulpit where daughter Whitney Houston’s funeral had also been held over a decade ago.
At the memorial, Warwick, who is Houston’s niece, emotionally expressed, “She gave me the right to be me. Cissy, I’m going to miss you.” Houston, a two-time Grammy-winning artist known for her collaborations with legends like Aretha Franklin and Elvis Presley, passed away on October 7.
