A former firefighter, Robert Stevenson, has been sentenced to seven years in prison for paying young girls to send him naked photographs. The 31-year-old would use social media platforms to contact underage girls, offering them money in exchange for explicit images. One victim, aged 15, reported Stevenson to the police after he threatened to post her picture online.
Stevenson’s criminal activities came to light when he messaged the teenager on Instagram, initially claiming to be 17 years old and offering her £100 for photos. The conversation then moved to Snapchat, where he further manipulated the young girl. Following his arrest, the police discovered incriminating messages to several other girls and identified numerous payments in his bank account.
After a trial at Derby Crown Court, Stevenson was found guilty of various offences including causing/inciting the sexual exploitation of a child and making indecent photographs of minors. In addition to the seven-year prison sentence, he has been subjected to a Sexual Harm Prevention Order and added to the sex offenders register.
Detective Sergeant Sophie Draycott, who supervised the case, commented on the severity of Stevenson’s actions, stating, “His behaviour was appalling and repeated so I am pleased that he has now been brought to justice for his crimes and is serving a prison sentence.” She also urged parents to monitor their children’s online activities and educate them about the risks associated with communicating with strangers on social media.
The prevalence of social media in today’s society has made it easier for predators to exploit vulnerable individuals, making it crucial for families to remain vigilant and ensure the safety of their children online. Stevenson’s case serves as a stark reminder of the dangers that lurk on the internet and the importance of proactive parental supervision in safeguarding young people from harm.
