A machete-wielding yob in Motherwell decided that his fearsome blade was no match for a police taser. Aiden Gaitens, aged 19, dropped the weapon after a chase on the ninth floor of a tower block. He appeared at Hamilton Sheriff Court and admitted to carrying an offensive weapon in Barons Tower on August 11. The incident unfolded when police were called to a disturbance around 8:30 pm. Upon reaching a stairwell on the ninth floor, they encountered Gaitens wielding a large machete.
A brief chase ensued, during which Gaitens turned around and brandished the blade at the pursuing officers. In response, one of the cops aimed his taser gun at Gaitens and instructed him to drop the weapon, to which he complied. Gaitens was remanded in custody, with his sentence deferred until the following month for background reports and an electronic tagging assessment. It was revealed that at the time of the incident, Gaitens was on early release from a 23-month sentence, having previously admitted to various charges, including assaulting a man with a knife in Bellshill.
