A Kentucky man’s harrowing experience nearly led to his organs being harvested while he was still alive, in a shocking turn of events discovered by doctors. The incident unfolded as medical staff at Baptist Health hospital in Richmond, Kentucky prepared to retrieve organs from a donor who had been deemed deceased. Natasha Miller, an organ preservationist present during the incident in October 2021, described the moment when the donor exhibited signs of life, moving and crying visibly on the bed.
The patient in question was identified as 36-year-old Anthony Thomas “TJ” Hoover II, who had been admitted to the hospital after a drug overdose earlier that day. Hoover’s sister, Donna Rhorer, recalled a moment of worry when her brother, being transferred between units, opened his eyes and glanced around the room, hinting at his continued consciousness. In the operating room, staff witnessed signs of life prompting immediate action to halt the organ retrieval process.
Miller recounted the chaotic scene as doctors refused to proceed with the procedure upon realising the donor had been inaccurately pronounced dead. Despite initial sedation attempts during earlier medical procedures, the donor had shown signs of consciousness, leading to the cancellation of the organ retrieval. Hoover, who survived the ordeal, now resides with his sister as his legal guardian.
The distressing incident left a lasting impact on medical personnel at Kentucky Organ Donor Affiliates (KODA), with some staff members resigning in its aftermath. Organ preservationist Nyckoletta Martin expressed her shock at the situation, underlining the lack of safeguards in place to protect donors from such errors in judgement. The incident prompted Martin to write a letter to Congress, detailing the unsettling encounter that had unfolded.
The House Energy and Commerce Committee’s Oversight and Investigations Subcommittee convened a hearing to address oversight of organ transplants, referencing Hoover’s case where he purportedly mouthed “Help me” while in the operating room. The gravity of the situation led to emotional distress amongst KODA employees, with some seeking therapy to process the trauma. Baptist Health Richmond Hospital stated that patient safety remains their utmost priority, emphasizing collaboration with patients and families to honour organ donation wishes.
Following the incident, Hoover has encountered challenges with memory, mobility, and speech, as per his sister’s account. The Kentucky Attorney General’s Office and the Health Resources and Services Administration are reportedly investigating the circumstances surrounding the case. The incident serves as a chilling reminder of the complexities and potential pitfalls in organ donation procedures, compelling a review of existing protocols and safeguards to prevent such errors in the future.
