Residents of Florida’s Gulf Coast who recently faced the impact of consecutive hurricanes are now facing another concern – a potential outbreak of harmful algae along the southwest coast of the state. Satellite images have revealed a bloom of algae along Florida’s western coastline near Tampa. However, confirmation of these findings has been delayed due to the effects of Hurricanes Helene and Milton on regular sampling procedures.
Federal authorities have stated that there is currently no immediate risk of respiratory issues from red tide in Florida. Red tides occur when algae multiply uncontrollably, releasing toxins that can be harmful to marine life and human health. Professor Beth Stauffer from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette explained that the algae bloom can be so dense that it discolours the water, giving rise to the name “red tide.”
The main species responsible for these blooms in Florida’s Gulf Coast is Karenia brevis, a microorganism that produces a potent neurotoxin. This toxin can become aerosolized near beaches, posing health risks to individuals with respiratory or autoimmune conditions. Scientists believe that the recent hurricanes in Florida could be exacerbating the growth of existing toxic algae in the region.
Red tides, also known as harmful algae blooms, occur when aquatic microorganisms multiply rapidly, producing toxins that can harm marine life and affect the safety of shellfish for consumption. Although hurricanes do not directly cause red tides, they can exacerbate the situation by stirring up nutrient-rich water that fuels the growth of these harmful microorganisms.
Health concerns related to harmful algae blooms include respiratory issues such as coughing, shortness of breath, and dizziness for those exposed to the toxins. Individuals with underlying respiratory conditions may experience more severe symptoms, while pets can also be affected by contact with the algae. Monitoring data from Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission indicated medium to high levels of Karenia brevis concentrations in coastal areas near Pinellas County.
The impact of hurricanes on harmful algae blooms includes the potential intensification and movement of these blooms closer to shorelines. Experts suggest that the recent storms may have facilitated the development of an evolving red tide bloom along the coastline, although further sampling and analysis are required to confirm the situation. Robert Weisberg, an emeritus professor at the University of South Florida, emphasised the need for additional research to fully understand the extent of the red tide following the hurricanes.
