A Cambodian freelance reporter known for his investigative reporting in a country with limited press freedom has been arrested. Mech Dara, renowned for investigating online scam centers, was taken into custody after posting about a rock quarry that local officials denounced as an attempt to incite dissent.
Before his phone was seized, Mech Dara managed to send a message to the rights group Licadho stating that he was being arrested by military police. The arrest was confirmed by CamboJA News, a project by the Cambodian Journalists Alliance Association, although the authorities’ exact reason for the arrest was not disclosed.
According to CamboJA, military police spokesperson Eng Hy acknowledged the arrest was conducted with a warrant but did not provide specifics on the cause or Mech Dara’s whereabouts. Family members reported that Mech Dara’s car was stopped at a toll booth, his phone was confiscated, and they were instructed to remain in the vehicle.
The arrest may be related to Mech Dara’s social media posts regarding a quarry operation and a sacred mountain in Prey Veng province, which local authorities disputed as an attempt to cause social disorder. Mech Dara, who previously worked for outlets like the Cambodia Daily and the Voice of Democracy radio, is recognised for his investigations into human trafficking linked to online scam activities.
These scams, involving luring individuals into virtual slavery through false job offers and romance schemes, have garnered attention globally. The U.S. State Department honoured Mech Dara for his efforts in exposing human trafficking operations, highlighting the impact of his work in combating this illicit activity.
Reporters Without Borders placed Cambodia 151st out of 180 countries in its press freedom index, citing limitations on media coverage and lack of balanced reporting. Despite the challenges faced by independent journalists in Cambodia, Mech Dara’s arrest serves as a stark reminder of the risks associated with investigative reporting in regions with restricted press freedoms.
