Family of Scots Grandad Faces £30,000 Hospital Bill in Benidorm
John Hollis, a grandfather from Castlemilk in Glasgow, is currently in intensive care in Benidorm, Spain, after falling seriously ill while on holiday. The 73-year-old was rushed to a hospital in Benidorm when his kidneys started failing during his trip with a friend. His condition deteriorated rapidly, leading medical professionals to place him in an induced coma as his organs began to fail. After five days on life support, John was taken off it, and although he is now in a more stable condition, he remains in intensive care.
John’s son, John Jnr, received a distressing call from doctors informing him that his father was not expected to survive and urged him to travel to Spain immediately. Upon arrival, John Jnr and his partner witnessed the critical state his father was in, with kidney failure leading to multiple organ failure. Despite the grim prognosis, John’s condition unexpectedly started to improve gradually over the following days. He is now able to sit up and eat soup, showing remarkable resilience in his battle for recovery.
While John continues his recovery in intensive care, the medical expenses are mounting, with the private hospital seeking payment. Although John had medical insurance through his bank, there is a dispute with the insurance company regarding his pre-existing medical conditions. As his family waits for a resolution, the hospital bill has already reached £30,000. John Jnr expressed gratitude for the community’s support, which has raised nearly £12,000 towards his father’s medical expenses.
The family is hopeful for John’s full recovery but faces challenges with the insurance company disputing coverage due to undisclosed pre-existing conditions. Medical professionals suspect that John’s kidney failure may have been caused by his diabetes medication, a matter the family plans to address once the immediate crisis is resolved. In the meantime, they have reached out for donations to help alleviate the financial burden.
The response from the community has been overwhelming, demonstrating tremendous support for the Hollis family during this difficult time. With John still in intensive care, the family remains optimistic about his ongoing recovery. AIG insurance, the insurer involved, has been approached for comment on the situation. For those willing to contribute to John’s medical fundraiser, a donation link is available for support.
