Moniaive’s Kate Howard shares her story in Galloway People

Moniaive’s Kate Howard is featured in the latest issue of Galloway People, as she shares her inspiring story. Kate, a trained singer, is deeply involved in music, leading the Cairn Chorus in Moniaive, the Songwave Choir in Castle Douglas, and the CatStrand Singers in New Galloway. Her passion for music shines through as she talks about her journey that spans both sides of the Atlantic.

Born in Wallasey on Merseyside, Kate only stayed there briefly before her family moved around various places, reflecting her mother’s travelling background. Despite her family not being musically inclined, Kate’s love for music was evident from a young age. Encouraged by a music teacher, Kate embarked on a musical path that led her to perform in big productions and eventually receive training in opera singing.

Kate’s life took a political turn in her teenage years, as she got involved with activism and movements like CND. Her passion for social causes led her to participate in various protests, including the one at Greenham Common, which connected her to the Laurieston Hall community in Galloway. Kate’s involvement in political movements continued, including supporting the miners’ strike and engaging in socialist choir activities.

Over the years, Kate’s life took her on a musical journey across the British Isles and the USA, where she lived in a log cabin with fellow musicians and travelled extensively for performances. Her dedication to music education eventually led her to a teaching position at a Steiner school in Devon, where she took on a significant role in the music department.

Kate’s resilience was tested when she faced health challenges, including battling breast cancer, and coping with a house flood that prompted her to move back to Galloway with her family. Settling in Moniaive, Kate found a sense of community and continued her musical endeavours by working as a music teacher in the Dumfries and Galloway region, focusing on traditional singing and Gaelic songs in schools.

Kate’s story is one of passion, perseverance, and a deep-rooted love for music that has guided her through life’s challenges and triumphs. Her unwavering dedication to music education and community engagement serves as an inspiration to all who cross paths with her in the vibrant musical landscape of Galloway.
