A couple from Dumfries marked a significant milestone in their lives as they celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary surrounded by loved ones. Sam and Beryl Martin were especially overjoyed as their great-granddaughter, Isla, was born in Edinburgh just three days before their special day.
The couple’s love story began when Beryl, originally from Gatehouse, caught the eye of Sam, a young man from Kirkcudbright, at a dance at Castle Douglas Town Hall. Their daughter Elaine shared that despite a life-changing leg amputation surgery that Sam underwent nine months ago, the couple remains resilient and full of excitement as they commemorated their diamond wedding anniversary. They hosted a small gathering with neighbours on the anniversary night followed by a family meal with around 20 relatives at Casa Mia.
Sam and Beryl exchanged vows at Girthon Parish Church on October 10, 1964. Instead of gifts, they requested donations to be given to Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary. Described as wonderful parents with an abundance of love for each other and their family, the couple’s devotion has been unwavering over the years.
Sam, who grew up on a farm in Kirkcudbright, had a career at ICI in Dumfries after his apprenticeship at the Scottish Milk Marketing Board. Beryl, one of three children from Gatehouse, worked for various companies before moving to Dumfries with Sam. The couple, both 82, have two children, Elaine and Andrew, four grandchildren, and now two great-granddaughters.
Throughout their lives, Sam and Beryl enjoyed hobbies like gardening, golf, and travelling abroad. Sam held leadership positions in various clubs and committees, showcasing his dedication to community involvement. Beryl, on the other hand, found joy in cooking, knitting, and gardening.
As the Martins celebrated six decades of marriage, their enduring love and commitment serve as an inspiration to all who know them. Their story exemplifies the beauty of a lasting partnership built on love, respect, and shared experiences.
