Plans for a mountain bike course in Balloch Park have received a significant funding boost as West Dunbartonshire Council secures £224,022 from the Cycling Facilities Fund. The total cost of the project is estimated at £344,651. This funding injection will support the creation of a purpose-built facility located in a designated area within the park. The aim is to promote and enhance cycling skills in the community.
This collaborative project involves West Dunbartonshire Council and West Dunbartonshire Leisure Trust, with the funding being administered by Sportscotland and Cycling Scotland. The envisioned 1km main trail, accessible to all, will offer an engaging experience by utilising the natural features of the site, incorporating sections for climbing, descending, and level cycling. Additionally, a short ‘link’ section will be included to provide riders with more route options around the facility.
The course will also feature optional technical elements akin to those found in mountain bike skills parks, allowing riders to challenge themselves and providing opportunities for formal coaching sessions. Councillor David McBride, Convener of Infrastructure, Regeneration, and Economic Development, expressed excitement about the project, anticipating that it will attract cyclists of all ages and abilities to the area. He also noted the potential for hosting major events at the site in the future.
Councillor Lawrence O’Neill, vice-convener, emphasised the importance of the Cycling Facilities Fund contribution in meeting the local demand for such a track. The £8 million fund aims to capitalise on the increasing interest in cycling by establishing a network of accessible facilities to encourage people of all ages to participate in the sport. This investment is made possible through a £4 million commitment from the Scottish Government and £4 million from sportscotland, supported by National Lottery funds.
The development of the mountain bike course in Balloch Park is set to transform the area into a hub for cyclists, providing a valuable resource for the community. With the funding now secured, the project is on track to progress, offering exciting prospects for cycling enthusiasts and potential for hosting significant cycling events in the future.
