Comet last seen 80,000 years ago still visible in UK skies

A remarkable event unfolded in North-East England as a comet last seen around 80,000 years ago visited the UK skies. Identified as the C/2023 A3 (Tsuchinshan–ATLAS) comet, it made its appearance in the dark skies of Northumberland, captivating skygazers equipped with telescopes at the Northumberland International Dark Sky Park.

Despite being discovered in January the previous year, astronomers noted that this comet would have last been observable when Neanderthals roamed the Earth. Comets, composed of dust, ice, and small rocky particles, are often likened to “dirty snowballs” and travel around the sun in an elliptical orbit, distinct from planets.

As comets approach the sun, they heat up, causing volatile materials like gases and ices trapped within them to escape through cracks in the comet’s crust. This process makes predicting a comet’s trajectory as it traverses the solar system a challenging task, according to Dr. Megan Argo, an astrophysicist from the University of Central Lancashire.

Dr. Argo highlighted that comets have the potential to develop distinctive “tails” when their rocky and icy cores disintegrate. The resulting tail of gas and dust can become luminous enough to be visible to the naked eye, even during daylight if one knows where to look.

The C/2023 A3 comet was initially observed in countries in the Southern Hemisphere on September 29, before re-emerging last week, appearing even brighter in the night skies. Dr. Argo explained that due to the comet’s fuzzy appearance, its brightness is dispersed across the sky, as opposed to the concentrated appearance of stars.

For those who were unable to witness the Tsuchinshan-ATLAS comet, astronomers suggested that it might still be observable with binoculars for the following weeks. However, beyond that timeframe, a telescope might be necessary to catch a glimpse of this extraordinary cosmic visitor.
