Record number of UK firms facing serious financial strain – report

A report has revealed that a record number of UK businesses are currently facing serious financial strain, as debts accumulated during the Covid-19 pandemic continue to impact the economy. According to research by insolvency specialists Begbies Traynor, between July and September, 632,756 firms were identified as being in “significant” financial distress. This figure marks a 5% increase from the previous quarter and a nearly 30% rise compared to the same period last year.

The report highlighted that 21 out of 22 sectors monitored by Begbies Traynor’s “red flag alert” saw a rise in the number of businesses experiencing significant financial troubles. The utilities sector, in particular, experienced a significant increase in distress levels, attributed in part to the ongoing energy crisis in the UK. Julie Palmer, a partner at Begbies Traynor, stated that no sector of the economy remains unaffected by the debt burdens accumulated by businesses during the pandemic.

Palmer also noted that high inflation continues to impact businesses, with the construction sector facing challenges due to elevated costs of materials and labour. The report indicated that about 4,300 construction firms were in “critical” financial distress during the same period. In a notable example, construction group ISG recently went into administration, leading to site closures and employee redundancies.

Despite the concerning figures, there was a slight decrease in the total number of businesses facing imminent collapse in the latest quarter, with 31,201 firms in “critical” financial distress, down 23% from the previous quarter. Ric Traynor, the executive chairman of Begbies, described this decline as a “welcome surprise.” However, he highlighted that it remains uncertain whether this trend will continue in the coming months, as the autumn typically sees a higher volume of corporate insolvencies.

Traynor emphasised that ongoing uncertainty looms over UK businesses, with many awaiting clarity on potential changes to the tax regime in the upcoming Budget. Business leaders are particularly concerned about the Government’s stance on issues such as employer national insurance, as they anticipate potential impacts on companies and investors. The report indicates that the challenging economic climate continues to pose significant challenges for businesses across various sectors in the UK.
