Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has clarified that he did not engage in discussions with the Football Association (FA) about the possibility of taking on the England national team coaching role. It was revealed that Arteta had been approached by then-England manager Fabio Capello back in 2010, considering him for eligibility to represent England due to his residency in the country for five years. However, the FA later discovered that Arteta would not qualify to play for England under FIFA’s complex eligibility regulations, even though he had never played for Spain’s senior team.
Reflecting on this, Arteta expressed his pride at the possibility of playing for England, acknowledging the competitive challenge he would have faced given Spain’s talented players at the time. Despite the opportunity not coming to fruition, Arteta appreciates the thought process and respects the decision made. He also discussed his enduring admiration for England, where he has resided for 22 years, and his contentment with his current role at Arsenal, indicating that he is not actively considering international management opportunities at present.
Although FA chief executive Mark Bullingham mentioned that around 10 candidates were interviewed for the England manager position, Arteta confirmed that he was not part of the selection process. He emphasised his commitment to Arsenal and his focus on the club’s ambitions. When asked about potentially managing a national team other than Spain in the future, Arteta highlighted his connection to England, where he feels at home and deeply respected, expressing pride in the football culture and treatment he has experienced in the country.
Regarding Arsenal’s upcoming match against Bournemouth, Arteta provided updates on the team’s injury status, expressing optimism about Bukayo Saka’s fitness following a minor injury sustained during the international break. He also mentioned that Kai Havertz is set for a late fitness assessment, while Thomas Partey has recovered from an illness. Unfortunately, Martin Odegaard is expected to miss the game due to an ankle injury but is anticipated to return before the next international break.
