Nine monkeys tragically lost their lives in just two days at Hong Kong’s oldest zoo, with officials revealing they had been infected with melioidosis, a potentially deadly disease. The incident occurred this week at the Hong Kong Zoological and Botanical Gardens, sparking concerns about the animals’ wellbeing and the possible risks to humans.
Secretary for Culture, Sports and Tourism Kevin Yeung addressed the media, explaining that the monkeys had contracted melioidosis, leading to sepsis. This disease is commonly transmitted through contact with contaminated soil and water, emphasizing that there is usually no threat to humans from infected animals. The nine monkeys included species like De Brazza’s monkeys, common squirrel monkeys, white-faced sakis, and cotton-top tamarins – with the latter being critically endangered.
The outbreak is believed to be linked to recent digging work near the monkeys’ cages to repair irrigation pipes. The digging disturbed the soil, potentially exposing the monkeys to the bacterium Burkholderia pseudomallei, the cause of melioidosis. Officials suspect that park staff, unknowingly carrying contaminated soil on their shoes, may have inadvertently introduced the bacterium to the monkeys.
Hong Kong’s Center for Health Protection confirmed that melioidosis is caused by the bacteria found in soils and muddy water. Secretary Yeung conducted an urgent meeting with relevant departments to address the situation and prevent further incidents. The affected zone was identified, and efforts are underway to contain the spread and protect both the remaining animals and visitors to the zoo.
Despite the unfortunate deaths of the monkeys, officials reassured the public that the overall risk to residents was minimal. They are closely monitoring the health of other monkeys in the facility to prevent any further outbreaks.
