Hilltop Primary School pupils have achieved great success by winning the top prize in Keep Scotland Beautiful’s Litter League. The Airdrie school was awarded the Glasgow and Strathclyde prize in 2023 and followed it up this year by winning the Scotland-wide award. The students’ efforts included organising two litter picks and gathering an impressive 83 bags of litter. Councillor Helen Loughran, convener of the environment and climate change committee, and Councillor Michael McBride, education committee convener, visited the school to commend the children on their commendable achievement in keeping their community clean.
The Litter League competition, part of Keep Scotland Beautiful’s annual Spring Clean Scotland campaign, saw 5864 children from across the country participating in 185 clean-ups. Hilltop Primary School’s dedication to the cause not only earned them recognition locally but also at a national level. Councillor Helen Loughran expressed her delight, stating, “Congratulations to the pupils and teachers at Hilltop Primary School on their amazing work to keep their local area clean for everyone.” She further encouraged other schools, community groups, and individuals to follow in Hilltop’s footsteps and participate in next year’s Spring Clean campaign, set to run from March 21 to April 21.
The success of the pupils at Hilltop Primary School is a testament to the positive impact young people can have on their communities through initiatives like the Litter League. By actively participating in efforts to tackle litter, these students have shown a strong commitment to environmental preservation and civic responsibility. Congratulations to all the students and staff at Hilltop Primary School for their outstanding contribution to keeping Scotland beautiful.
