New innovative overhead bin design set to revolutionise hand luggage storage on flights has been unveiled, offering a potential solution to the perennial problem of finding space for cabin bags.
Airbus has announced the upcoming introduction of the “Airspace L Bins” on some of its planes next year, offering passengers an increased storage capacity of up to 60 per cent compared to the previous generation of A320 bins. This enhancement aims to provide room for three additional bags per bin, aiming to alleviate the stress and rush often associated with securing overhead storage space during boarding.
The inaugural deployment of these new bins is imminent, with Lufthansa’s A320s scheduled to be the first aircraft to receive the upgraded storage compartments in January 2025. The increased capacity of the L bins should facilitate smoother boarding and disembarkation processes by allowing more efficient storage of carry-on luggage.
The larger bins are designed to accommodate bags measuring up to 61cm in height, 38cm in width, and 25cm in depth. Constructed from ultra-lightweight and durable composite materials, the bins will incorporate components from the original bins to reduce waste during the retrofitting process.
Airbus estimates that the retrofitting of the new bins onto aircraft will take just three to five days per aircraft, representing the company’s fastest and most cost-effective cabin upgrade to date. Charbel Youzkatli, Airbus’s head of commercial services Europe, emphasised the enhanced passenger experience offered by the larger bins and highlighted the efficiency gains for airline operations.
Following the initial deployment with Lufthansa, other airlines such as Iberia and Swiss have also announced plans to equip some of their A320s with the new Airspace L Bins. The industry’s response to the introduction of these enhanced overhead bins underscores the importance placed on improving the passenger experience and operational efficiency for airlines.
