Chelsea Captain Reece James Limited to Playing once a Week, Says Enzo Maresca
Chelsea captain Reece James will make his first appearance of the season when Chelsea takes on Liverpool this Sunday. However, according to manager Enzo Maresca, the 24-year-old will only be able to play one game a week for the foreseeable future due to ongoing injury concerns.
James has been sidelined since last season’s penultimate game after aggravating a hamstring injury during pre-season. Following surgery in December, he missed most of the second half of the previous campaign. With defenders Marc Cucurella and Wesley Fofana suspended for the Liverpool match, James’s return comes at a crucial time for the team.
Maresca expressed his relief at James’s availability, acknowledging the challenges that come with returning from a series of injuries. The manager highlighted the importance of managing James’s playing time carefully to avoid further setbacks. He emphasized the need to gradually build up James’s physical condition by utilising him judiciously once a week.
In recent seasons, James has struggled with knee and hamstring injuries, limiting his Premier League appearances to just 26 matches. The previous campaign was especially frustrating for the England international, with a significant number of games missed due to various injuries.
Despite James’s absence, Maresca has been able to rely on the promising Malo Gusto as a competent replacement at right-back. The French youngster has stepped up admirably, showcasing the depth of Chelsea’s squad and providing healthy competition within the team.
Regarding reports of the Football Association’s interest in Chelsea’s coaching staff, Maresca clarified that while an approach was made for performance analyst James Melbourne, goalkeeping coach Hilario has not been contacted. Maresca affirmed the club’s openness to allowing staff opportunities to grow professionally while expressing the desire to retain those who wish to stay.
As Chelsea prepares to face Liverpool with James’s return, Maresca remains focused on managing the captain’s workload effectively. With the aim of keeping James fit and gradually improving his physical condition, the team looks to utilise his talents strategically while navigating the challenges of a demanding season ahead.
