**Perry High School Shooter Attempted to Livestream Actions, Report Reveals**
A new report sheds light on the incident involving a deadly shooting at a small-town high school in Iowa back in January. The report discloses that the teenage shooter made an attempt to livestream his actions during the tragic event.
The shooting, carried out by 17-year-old student Dylan Butler at Perry High School, sent shockwaves through the town of Perry, located approximately 40 miles northwest of Des Moines. Butler opened fire on students and staff before classes commenced on January 4, the first day back at school after the winter break. Shortly after beginning the shooting spree, Butler took his own life with a single gunshot.
The tragic incident took place in the school’s commons area, where around 50 individuals, including students and staff, were gathered for breakfast. According to the report, Butler arrived at the school armed with a shotgun, revolver, knife, and a homemade explosive device, which were concealed on his person. He first went to a bathroom near the commons area, where he posted on social media and attempted to livestream his actions.
Emerging from the restroom armed with the shotgun, Butler started firing at those present. Within the initial 24 seconds, he fatally shot an 11-year-old sixth-grader named Ahmir Jolliff and injured four other students along with Perry High School Principal Dan Marburger.
The report, authored by the Dallas County Attorney’s Office and based on investigations by multiple agencies, includes a warning about the distressing details it contains. Additionally, it highlights the courageous efforts of Marburger and others who intervened during the shooting. Marburger and Assistant Principal Brad Snowgren moved towards the gunfire source, with Snowgren swiftly triggering an alarm to alert first responders.
Marburger, despite being wounded early on in the shooting, chose to confront Butler and tried to plead with him to stop. Tragically, Marburger was critically injured and succumbed to his wounds days later in a Des Moines hospital. The investigation concluded that Butler acted alone, with no evidence pointing towards anyone having prior knowledge of his plans or assisting him in the attack.
While school staff had regular interactions with Butler, there were no indications of his intentions on the day of the shooting. The report also confirmed that Butler was not the subject of any previous law enforcement inquiries, threat assessments, or intelligence reports.
Authorities are yet to determine how Butler acquired the shotgun used in the incident, but evidence suggests it was obtained from outside his home without the owner’s consent. The report indicates that Butler’s actions that day appeared to be impulsive and driven by a desire to take his own life while harming others.
