Teen Surfer Survives Shark Attack off Florida Coast
A teenage surfer’s dream of becoming a professional surfer was nearly shattered when he was attacked by a shark off the coast of Florida. Teddy Wittemann, 16, had a terrifying encounter with a shark while reaching for his surfboard in the waves. Fortunately, he was rescued by a couple on the beach who acted quickly to tourniquet a shirt around his wounds until emergency responders arrived.
Reflecting on the incident, Wittemann told Fox News that “it could have been so much worse.” The attack took place as he was 200 feet from the shore at Melbourne Beach, Florida, surfing with a friend and heading back out after catching a wave. Describing the harrowing moment, Wittemann shared on Instagram how the shark bit into his elbow/forearm and thrashed him around momentarily, giving him a glimpse of the 5-foot predator along his body.
Despite the traumatic experience, Wittemann managed to paddle back to shore while screaming for help. Gruesome photos of his injuries revealed deep tissue wounds and bite marks, but he was fortunate not to have any damage to his tendons or ligaments. The young surfer, recognised as a rising star by the World Surf League, expressed his gratitude to the couple, Dave and Toie Crespi, who swiftly came to his aid upon seeing him in distress.
Emergency responders from Fire Station 64 treated Wittemann for his injuries at the scene before transporting him to Holmes Regional Medical Center, where he received at least 30 stitches. Despite the ordeal, the determined teenager is focused on his recovery and getting back in the water to pursue his dream of becoming a professional surfer. His father, Ted, remains cautiously optimistic, hoping for a smooth recovery without complications.
Wittemann’s immediate goal is to qualify for the International Surfing Association (ISA) World Junior Games, showcasing his resilience and unwavering passion for surfing. As he continues to heal with a cast on his arm, the young surfer remains undeterred in his pursuit of a successful surfing career.
