Schools across multiple states have been affected by the recall of approximately 12 million pounds of meat and poultry from BrucePac, according to the US Department of Agriculture. The initial list released by federal officials includes over 100 schools in various states, following the recall of BrucePac products earlier this month due to concerns about listeria contamination.
The recall applies to ready-to-eat products and was expanded to include the full quantity of affected products on October 15. Schools in states like Pennsylvania, Florida, Washington DC, New Jersey, New York, Georgia, and Michigan are among those impacted, having purchased the recalled meat from different vendors, not through the USDA’s National School Lunch and Breakfast Programs.
The issue came to light after routine product testing by the USDA’s Food Safety Inspection Service revealed Listeria monocytogenes contamination in finished products containing ready-to-eat poultry items from BrucePac. Despite the recall, there have been no confirmed reports of illness linked to the consumption of the recalled products.
Listeria is identified as the third leading cause of death from foodborne illnesses in the United States, with an estimated 1,600 people contracting the infection annually, resulting in 260 deaths, as per the Centers for Disease Control.
