Storm Ashley is expected to cause havoc in parts of the UK, with wind speeds reaching up to 80mph. The first named storm of the year poses a serious threat to life, especially in coastal areas, according to warnings from the Met Office.
An amber weather warning has been issued ahead of Storm Ashley’s arrival in the north-west of Scotland on Sunday. In addition, a yellow warning covers all of Scotland, Northern Ireland, as well as parts of Wales and north-west England. The amber warning will be in effect from 9am on Sunday until midnight, while the yellow warning spans from 3am to midnight.
The Met Office has cautioned that gusts of 80mph could hit north-west Scotland, leading to potential injuries and risks to life from large waves and debris on coastal roads and properties. Power cuts are also likely, which could impact mobile phone coverage, with buildings at risk of damage including tiles being blown off roofs.
Disruption and cancellations to road, rail, air, and ferry services are anticipated, along with possible road and bridge closures. Meteorologist Aidan McGivern highlighted the rapid development of Storm Ashley into a deep area of low pressure, bringing widespread gales and wind gusts exceeding 60mph to western and northern parts of the country.
Clouds are set to thicken, and winds will strengthen in the early hours of Sunday, accompanied by outbreaks of rain in Northern Ireland and the west of the UK. Western regions could face winds of 50mph to 60mph with heavy rain, particularly affecting exposed coasts and hills. The strongest winds are expected to sweep exposed areas of Northern Ireland and western Scotland, with gusts of 70mph likely, possibly reaching 80mph in parts of western Scotland.
Transport Scotland has issued a warning of possible disruptions to public transport, including the ferry network. Families travelling during the October school holidays have been advised to monitor for cancellations and updates as Storm Ashley prepares to unleash its power before clearing on Monday.
