Lando Norris admits defeat to Max Verstappen and Ferraris in sprint race
British driver Lando Norris finished third in the sprint event in Texas, trailing behind title rival Max Verstappen and Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz. The race saw Norris concede second place to Sainz on the final lap, allowing Verstappen to extend his championship lead.
Verstappen, who hadn’t won in his last eight races, reclaimed his dominant form at Austin’s Circuit of the Americas, securing his first victory in nearly four months. Norris, starting from fourth, made an impressive start to climb to second place initially, but was unable to hold off Sainz’s charge in the closing stages.
Reflecting on the race, Norris acknowledged the superior pace of the Ferraris compared to his McLaren, admitting, “I didn’t think I would ever be able to get Max.” Despite struggling with tyre degradation towards the end, Norris managed to fend off Charles Leclerc to secure a podium finish. He expressed satisfaction with his third-place result considering the team’s performance struggles throughout the weekend.
McLaren had hoped Norris could challenge Verstappen, especially as the Dutch driver appeared to be experiencing tyre wear. However, Norris was unable to close the gap and ultimately succumbed to pressure from Sainz on the final lap, narrowly avoiding a collision with Leclerc in the process.
The race marked a return to form for Verstappen, who showcased impeccable control throughout to clinch victory. Meanwhile, George Russell, who initially posed a threat to Norris, fell back in the pack due to tyre issues.
