Solange Knowles, renowned singer and sister of Beyoncé, has recently disclosed that she has been diagnosed with three chronic illnesses back in 2018. The talented singer-songwriter, known for her breakthrough album “A Seat at the Table” in 2016, shared her health struggles on Instagram in response to a post by model and musician Shaun Ross discussing long Covid.
In her Instagram post, Knowles expressed empathy for those dealing with the challenges of POTS, standing for Postural Tachycardia Syndrome, along with Sjogren’s Syndrome and MCAS (Mast Cell Activation Syndrome). She mentioned that she understands the desire not to let one’s health define their identity and acknowledged the support she received from the Dysautonomia International group and the “spoonie” community during uncertain times.
POTS is a condition characterised by an abnormally rapid heart rate when changing positions, while Sjogren’s Syndrome is an autoimmune disease affecting moisture-producing glands in the body. MCAS causes severe allergic reactions impacting various body systems. Dysautonomia International supports research and enhances the lives of individuals with autonomic nervous system disorders, while the “spoonie” community offers online support for those with chronic illnesses.
This isn’t the first time Solange Knowles has disclosed health issues. In 2017, she had to cancel a performance in South Africa due to a nervous system disorder. In an Instagram post, she mentioned her struggles with an Autonomic Disorder and the challenges she faced during treatment, leading to the cancellation of her show at Afropunk.
While the talented artist didn’t disclose many details about her condition at the time, she mentioned the complexities of her diagnosis and the advice from medical professionals against performing due to her health. Solange’s openness about her health journey serves as a reminder of the importance of self-care and seeking support during times of uncertainty.
As Solange Knowles continues to navigate her health challenges, her openness about her journey can inspire others facing similar struggles to seek help and community support. Her resilience and transparency shed light on the realities of living with chronic illnesses while emphasising the importance of self-care and reaching out for assistance when needed.
