Firefighters in Oakland, California, are battling extreme ‘diablo wind’ conditions as they work towards extinguishing a devastating brush fire that broke out on Friday afternoon. The fire, fuelled by strong winds, has already burned two residential homes and caused damage to several others in its path, leading to the evacuation of around 500 people before it was successfully contained.
Fire Chief Damon Covington provided an update on Saturday, stating that the firefighting efforts would persist through the evening and into Sunday morning. Over 100 firefighters have been tirelessly working to halt the progression of the flames in the challenging weather conditions.
The alarm was raised at approximately 1:30 p.m. on Friday when reports of a fire in the Oakland hills emerged. Responding crews were met with rapidly escalating inferno, exacerbated by gusts of winds reaching speeds of up to 40 mph (64 kph) during red-flag weather conditions. The intensity of the fire resulted in the destruction of two homes and the structural damage of several others, prompting widespread evacuations.
The situation led to the temporary closure of westbound lanes on Interstate 580, although traffic flow was eventually restored by Friday night. While certain evacuation orders have been lifted, many residents are still unable to return to their homes until the fire is fully contained and the area is deemed safe for re-entry, as noted by Covington.
In an effort to further secure the area, fire crews are actively engaged in removing eucalyptus trees that pose additional fire hazards due to their highly flammable bark and oils. Red-flag warnings signalling high fire risks were issued across significant parts of California until Saturday, encompassing regions from the central coast through the Bay Area and extending into northern Shasta County near the Oregon border.
The name ‘diablo wind’ refers to the hot, dry gusts characteristic of autumn weather in the region, known for escalating wildfire risks. These wind patterns lead to plummeting humidity levels, desiccating vegetation and creating optimal conditions for fires to ignite and spread rapidly.
