Tearful Francis Ngannou Pays Tribute to Late Son After KO Win Over Renan Ferreira
Francis Ngannou, a 38-year-old fighter, emerged victorious in the ‘Battle of the Giants’ event with a first-round knockout against Renan Ferreira in the Professional Fighters League (PFL) heavyweight title fight. Ngannou, a former UFC heavyweight champion, made a return to mixed martial arts after transitioning to boxing and facing Anthony Joshua in April. He continued, “I wanted to fight for him… I hope they can remember his name, because without Kobe, we wouldn’t be here tonight, I wouldn’t have fought. Thank you everyone for coming.” The event deviated from PFL’s usual format of regular season and playoffs to ensure that titles were on the line for Ngannou’s highly-anticipated return.
Ngannou’s journey to becoming a champion is remarkable, having risen from poverty in Cameroon to the pinnacle of mixed martial arts. His most notable achievement was clinching the UFC heavyweight title in March 2021. After his UFC contract expired, he ventured into lucrative heavyweight boxing matches against Joshua and Tyson Fury before eventually signing with PFL, marking a significant enhancement to the brand’s competition with the UFC.
