Protests against the tourism industry have gained momentum in Spain’s sought-after holiday locations, including the Balearic Islands. Signs and graffiti bearing messages like “tourist go home” accentuate the local outrage fuelled by rising rents due to properties being acquired for tourist lodging.
Andrew McVey, a British resident who relocated to Mallorca, took to the streets to capture the pulse of the demonstrations, capturing local reactions in a video on his YouTube channel, Loving Life Mallorca. Marga, a hotel receptionist, voiced her stance, stating, “We need it [tourism]. I work at the reception, I love guests. I love England too. And we are very happy that they are coming here […] the tourists, we are living off them. We have to take care of them!”
Alex and Eric, students from Palma, expressed their positive views on tourists on the island, citing employment opportunities in the tourism sector. Visitors Paul and Rita from Belfast shared their experience, highlighting a sense of safety during their stay.
