Palestinian journalist Plestia escapes Gaza to Lebanon only to find the war follows her – reported by The Independent
Plestia Alaqad, a courageous Palestinian journalist, who gained international recognition for documenting the atrocities of the war in Gaza on Instagram, recently fled to Lebanon for a fresh start. She had enrolled at the esteemed American University of Beirut but soon found herself once again engulfed by conflict when Israel’s war reached Lebanon.
Amid escalating violence between Israel and Hezbollah, parts of Lebanon, including Beirut, faced heavy bombing, resulting in numerous civilian casualties and over a million people being displaced from their homes. For 22-year-old Alaqad, witnessing the displacement and destruction stirred painful memories of the plight of Palestinian people.
Having experienced the horrors of war firsthand in Gaza, Alaqad felt compelled to speak out about the devastation in Lebanon caused by Israel’s military actions. Forced to leave her studies behind and relocate to Egypt due to the escalating war, she now grapples with the uncertainty of the situation and continues her advocacy work remotely.
Alaqad, who earned acclaim for her impactful social media coverage of the Gaza conflict, including the daily struggles of civilians, reflects on the limitations of journalism in effecting real change amidst ongoing violence. Despite the challenges she faces, Alaqad remains resolute in her quest to shed light on the plight of Palestinians and amplify their voices on a global platform.
The aspiring journalist, motivated by the belief that sharing stories of resilience and everyday life in Gaza is crucial, is working on a book chronicling her experiences during the Gaza war. Through her upcoming book and continued advocacy efforts, Alaqad endeavors to humanize the Palestinian narrative and challenge the media’s portrayal of conflict in the region.
Alaqad’s journey exemplifies resilience in the face of adversity and a commitment to bearing witness to the untold stories of those impacted by conflict. As she navigates her way through challenging circumstances, she remains steadfast in her mission to preserve the memory of Gaza and its people, beyond the tragedies captured by the media.
