A tragic incident that occurred 30 years ago has come to a grim resolution, as a 60-year-old woman has been arrested on suspicion of murder in connection to the death of a baby whose body was found inside a shopping bag. The shocking discovery was made by a California man who stumbled upon the lifeless newborn while searching for aluminum cans.
The baby boy, estimated to be around three days old, was wrapped in a pink and blue blanket and placed inside a red shopping bag at what was described as an “unofficial garbage dump” on Garin Road in Monterey County on December 3, 1994. Despite efforts at the time, authorities were unable to identify the mother or the baby, and the case went cold.
Recently, advances in DNA technology played a crucial role in leading investigators to the arrest of 60-year-old Pamela Ferreyra, who has now been charged with one count of murder in relation to the infant’s death. The cause of the baby’s death has not been disclosed, as the remains were too decomposed back in 1994. However, it was confirmed that the newborn had not been stillborn.
When the baby was found, he was found dressed in a turquoise sleeper suit, blue jumper, and white socks and cap. These details, along with the presence of a longer-than-usual umbilical cord, led authorities to believe that the baby was likely born outside of a hospital. Despite initial investigations and questioning of residents in the area where the baby was discovered, no leads were established at the time.
Named Baby Garin after the road where he was found, authorities shared that the name symbolizes protection, emphasizing that every child deserves advocacy and justice. The case of Baby Garin was revisited by a cold case task force last year, and DNA samples from the baby eventually led to the identification of Ferreyra as the mother.
Ferreyra, who works as an in-home health care provider and has other children, was taken into custody and formally charged with murder. Officials expressed the emotional weight of cases involving crimes against children, highlighting the dedication and perseverance required in such investigations. They hope that this arrest will inspire people to come forward with information in other cold cases the task force is working on, emphasizing the importance of seeking justice for all victims, regardless of when the crimes occurred.
