US Defence Secretary visits Kyiv for discussions on continued support for Ukraine in its conflict with Russia.
U.S. Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin made a surprise visit to Kyiv on Monday, following a recent Russian drone attack on the Ukrainian capital. This visit comes as Ukraine’s President, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, urges Western allies to maintain military assistance in the ongoing conflict.
Austin stated that his fourth visit to Kyiv demonstrates the unwavering support of the United States and the international community for Ukraine. The country is facing challenges in repelling a fierce Russian offensive along the eastern front, resulting in the loss of several towns and villages.
Zelenskyy is advocating for backing from Western partners for his ‘victory plan’ to resolve the nearly three-year conflict, which has claimed a significant number of lives on both sides. This plan includes a formal invitation for Ukraine to join NATO and authorisation to use Western long-range missiles against military targets in Russia, measures that have previously met with reluctance from Kyiv’s allies.
Despite receiving positive responses from countries such as France, Lithuania, and Nordic nations within the EU, Zelenskyy emphasised the crucial role of the United States, Ukraine’s primary military supplier, in supporting his strategy. While acknowledging promising signals from the U.S., he stopped short of confirming Washington’s full endorsement of the plan.
Overnight attacks by Russia on Ukraine involved the firing of three missiles and 116 drones, causing minor damage to civilian infrastructure in Kyiv. The city experienced the sound of machine gun fire and drones flying overhead, with reports of debris falling in various districts.
The visit of the U.S. Defence Secretary highlights the ongoing efforts to assist Ukraine in its confrontation with Russia, amidst escalating tensions and the urgent need for international support. The discussions in Kyiv between Austin and Ukrainian officials are expected to focus on strategies to bolster Ukraine’s defence capabilities and bring an end to the protracted conflict in the region.
