German Groups Innovate to Reduce Waste in Hops Harvesting for Beer Production

In a bid to address the significant waste generated during the harvesting of hops for beer production, German groups are pioneering inventive solutions. The venture involves a startup named HopfON, a clever play on the German word for hops – “Hopfen,” and a research society based in Bavaria. The aim is to tackle the waste issue prevalent in the hops harvest process in Germany.

The inception of this innovative idea can be traced back to two students from the Technical University of Munich. They were inspired during a casual conversation in 2022 about the application of banana fibers in Colombia for sustainable building materials. The concept of utilizing waste from the renowned hop-producing region of Bavaria sparked their interest, leading to the establishment of HopfON.

HopfON’s primary objective is to minimise waste from both the construction and beer industries by repurposing the leaves, spines, and vines left behind post-harvest. Concurrently, the Society of Hop Research in Bavaria is working on breeding new hop varieties that inherently produce less waste from the outset.

The statistics surrounding waste generation are alarming, with the construction and demolition sector accounting for over a third of all waste in the European Union. During the annual hops harvest in Germany’s Hallertau region, a staggering 80% of biomass from the hops plant is discarded, with only 20% utilised for brewing purposes.

While some hop waste is repurposed for fertilisers and energy production in biogas plants, a substantial amount remains unused and poses environmental challenges for farmers. The initiative by HopfON offers a sustainable solution by converting this waste into products like acoustic panels, thermal insulation, and building boards, thereby reducing the carbon footprint of the industries involved.

The team at HopfON follows a meticulous process of sourcing fresh material during the harvest, drying it promptly, and employing a unique method to transform it into valuable products. Their circular model allows customers to return products for remanufacturing, fostering a closed-loop system that promotes sustainability.

Moreover, the Society of Hop Research in Bavaria is actively contributing to waste reduction by developing new hop varieties that produce significantly less waste without compromising on quality. This research-driven approach ensures that the traditional hop flavour desired by brewers and consumers is maintained.

As these innovative ventures gain momentum in Germany’s beer industry, they set a precedent for sustainable practices within the agricultural and construction sectors. By harnessing local resources, reimagining waste as a valuable asset, and prioritising environmental conservation, these German initiatives exemplify a progressive approach towards waste management and sustainability.
