McLaren Express Outrage at ‘Inappropriate’ F1 Officials Following Norris vs Verstappen Duel
McLaren has voiced their frustration towards F1 officials for what they deem as “inappropriate” interference during the intense battle between Lando Norris and Max Verstappen at the US Grand Prix. The dispute resulted in Norris losing a podium position in the race.
In the midst of an exhilarating competition for the F1 Drivers’ Championship, Norris, who trailed Verstappen by 52 points before the race in Austin, was vying for third place with his rival in the closing laps. Despite a one-two victory for Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz, Norris appeared to have successfully overtaken Verstappen at Turn 12 with four laps remaining. However, a five-second penalty was imposed on Norris on the final lap for allegedly gaining an advantage by running off the track during the maneuver. Consequently, he was demoted to fourth place behind Verstappen after the race concluded.
The stewards justified their decision by stating that Norris did not have the “right” to the corner as he was not alongside Verstappen at the apex. Nevertheless, they acknowledged that Verstappen also exceeded the track limits, leading Norris to take evasive action. This outcome leaves Norris trailing Verstappen by 57 points as only 146 points are up for grabs in the final five rounds of the season.
McLaren team principal Andrea Stella criticised the stewards’ intervention, describing it as inappropriate and lamenting the missed opportunity for a podium finish. Despite the disappointment, Stella acknowledged that such decisions cannot be appealed and emphasised the need to move forward to the next race.
Norris, starting from pole position, slipped to fourth place after a challenging first corner and was unable to contest for the race win. Frustrated by the penalty, Norris disputed the stewards’ ruling, highlighting that Verstappen also benefited from going off-track to defend his position, which influenced the outcome of the incident. Verstappen, however, maintained that the rules were clear regarding overtaking outside white lines.
Looking ahead, the F1 circus will head to the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez for the Mexican Grand Prix. Verstappen’s and Norris’s differing views on the incident further intensify the rivalry as the championship battle continues to unfold.
