Lebanon is assessing the damage caused by a series of Israeli strikes targeting a Hezbollah-run financial institution. The strikes hit nearly a dozen branches of Al-Qard Al-Hassan, a financial institution allegedly used by Hezbollah to fund attacks but also where many ordinary people keep their savings. The Israeli military provided maps of targeted branches, prompting thousands of evacuations. Local TV networks also clarified misinformation regarding a targeted upscale mall that was incorrectly labelled.
Despite the chaos, Al-Qard Al-Hassan tried to reassure its customers by confirming the evacuation of all branches and the relocation of assets to safe areas. The institution has served as an alternative to Lebanese banks amidst a financial crisis, winning support from civilians unaffiliated with Hezbollah. The strikes have occurred amidst global concern over civilian casualties in the conflict and a recent apology from Israel for a mistaken strike on a Lebanese army vehicle that resulted in casualties.
